A Link Between Processed Foods and Depression

There was an interesting article online last week that I just had to share with all of you. We’ve all heard the saying “You are what you eat”. But did you ever think that the foods you eat could INCREASE your risk of depression. Read the article below and tell me what you think.

A diet heavy in processed and fatty foods increases the risk of depression, according to British research published on Monday.
Researchers at University College London also found that a diet including plenty of fresh vegetables, fruit and fish could help prevent the onset of depression.
They compared participants -- all civil servants -- who ate a diet largely based on "whole" foods with a second group who mainly ate fried food, processed meat, high-fat dairy products and sweetened desserts.
Taking into account other indicators of a healthy lifestyle such as not smoking and taking physical exercise, those who ate the whole foods had a 26 percent lower risk of depression than those who ate mainly processed foods.
People with a diet heavy in processed food had a 58 percent higher risk of depression.
The researchers put forward several explanations for the findings, which are published in the British Journal of Psychiatry.
Firstly, the high level of antioxidants in fruits and vegetables could have a protective effect, as previous studies have shown higher antioxidant levels to be associated with a lower risk of depression.
Secondly, eating lots of fish may protect against depression because it contains high levels of the sort of polyunsaturated fatty acids which stimulate brain activity.
And they said it was possible that a "whole food" diet protects against depression because of the combined effect of consuming nutrients from lots of different types of food, rather than the effect of one single nutrient.
The researchers concluded: "Our research suggests that healthy eating policies will generate additional benefits to health and well-being, and that improving people's diet should be considered as a potential target for preventing depressive disorders."
The study was carried out on 3,486 people with an average age of 55, who worked for the civil service in London.
Each participant completed a questionnaire about their eating habits, and a self-assessment for depression.

Money, Money, Money Part 3

Tomorrow is Not Promised!

Once this financial crisis comes to an end we will be left to live the life we created during its height. If we choose to let our health fall by the wayside today we will regret it tomorrow. But why have regrets when you don't have to. You know the benefits of health and fitness and you know the risk of living an unhealthy lifestyle. So why not choose what's best for you and your family. Today is the day, tomorrow is not promised. Don't put your health off for another day or another minute. Take control of one of the few things in life that we do have control over. No, we cant control the stock market, health care, social security, raised taxes or gas prices. But we can control what we eat and how we live our lives. Our health is our greatest asset. So invest in yourself and your future and MOVE THAT BODY!

Money, Money, Money Part 2

Everyone is all stressed out and uptight over our crazy, but real financial crisis. People are giving up and becoming depressed and unfortunately for some, even suicidal. Our nations money problems are real and overwhelming. And in the midst of all this I'm sure the last thing on many peoples minds is health and fitness. Some see health and fitness as a luxury when in reality it is a necessity. I guarantee you that if you put off your health and fitness goals as a result of your money concerns, YOU WILL REGRET IT. I've listed some reasons why below.

Regular exercise has been proven to help:

  • Reduce stress
  • Ward off anxiety and feelings of depression
  • Boost self-esteem
  • Improve sleep

Exercise also has these added health benefits:

  • It strengthens your heart.
  • It increases energy levels.
  • It lowers blood pressure.
  • It improves muscle tone and strength.
  • It strengthens and builds bones.
  • It helps reduce body fat.
  • It makes you look fit and healthy.

Is exercise a treatment for clinical depression?

Research has shown that exercise is an effective but often underused treatment for mild to moderate depression.

Do particular types of exercise help depression?

It appears that any form of exercise can help depression. Some examples of moderate exercise include:

  • Biking
  • Dancing
  • Gardening
  • Golf (walking instead of using the cart)
  • Housework, especially sweeping, mopping, or vacuuming
  • Jogging at a moderate pace
  • Low-impact aerobics
  • Playing tennis
  • Swimming
  • Walking
  • Yard work, especially mowing or raking
  • Yoga

If you feel yourself getting more than just down and discouraged the last thing you should is do is NOTHING. Get up and get moving. Health and fitness may not be the answer to your financial crisis but it may be one of a few things that can get you through it.

Money, Money, Money

Money problems all around. This down economy is hitting us hard. How could something so small and green cause so much trouble? LOL Many of us are letting our money problems get us down and get in the way of our health and fitness goals. Don't let your money troubles get you down. And don't use your money problems as an excuse to gain weight and/or become unhealthy.

With all the stress and worry going around this is the best and most important time to stay active. If you let your worries take over, then you become more susceptible to depression and despair. If your feeling down and desire to sit around and mope, worry or feel sorry for yourself then do the complete opposite. Get up and get moving. Put in a workout tape, call a friend and go for a walk, jog a mile on the treadmill, write in your goal journal and set some new goals, hit the bag for a while or do some sit-ups. Whatever you do, don't give up.

Studies have shown that those who exercise on a regular basis are least likely to to suffer from depression. I used to work for a Chiropractor in high school and learned that just a few twists and turns of the spinal chord can do wonders for your mental state. And that's because when we exercise our bodies release what's called endorphins. These endorphins react with our brains to reduce our perception of pain. For example, the feeling that follows a great run or workout is often described as euphoric. We call it "the natural high". Many times all we need is a good workout to give us a better outlook and to calm our nerves.

So the next time your feeling down get moving. Who knows maybe during that walk you'll stumble, bump your head, pass out and dream of the winning lotto numbers. LOL Hey, you never know. All it takes is a dollar and a dream. LOL

Until we meet again, Eat Clean, Get High (on endorphins) and Dream Lotto Numbers! LOL

Resolutions are not just for January anymore

Ok, so your kids are finally settled in at school and your family has gotten into the grove of juggling appointments, games, church stuff and family time. So now it’s time do what you said you were going to do. And that was getting on track with your health and fitness goals. You made a promise to yourself at the end of the summer that once everyone got settled with school and work you would head to the gym, start walking, change your bad eating habits or hire trainer. Well that time is here and that time is NOW. What are you waiting for? NO MORE EXCUSES! Stop putting off the healthy living and start shedding those pounds.

If you were unhappy with the way you felt and looked during the summer just think of how miserable you’ll be after the holidays. The holidays could the worst . . .if you let it. Don’t set the stage for another disappointing year. We still have two and half months before the end of the year. That is plenty of time to CHANGE YOUR ENTIRE LIFE!

Many see January as a time to wipe the slate clean and to start a new. So we put off embarking on all of our hopes and dreams until then. But change is not instantaneous. You have to learn to crawl before you can walk and walk before you can run. So if you start eating clean, setting/meeting goals along with working-out TODAY, then by January it will all be apart of your everyday life. You will be starting the year out right. So while others are just making resolutions, you’ll be living yours out.

This is a cycle that we all know to well. Make a resolution – keep it for 1 or 2 weeks – revert to our old habits – guilt and disappointment – more old habits – more guilt and disappointment – give up and settle back into our old lives until January comes back around. Don’t let this be your life anymore. Break the cycle by doing something about it NOW. That is the only way to end it.

Here’s how to break the cycle

1) Start today and don’t put it off another hour (ex. grab a gallon of water and start drinking it down).
2) Keep your words. Hire the trainer, sign up for the gym membership, play with your kids until you’re out of breath and TURN THE TELEVISION OFF. Replace an hour of TV time with some physical activity.
3) Keep it lean and green. Start eating lean proteins and tons of green veggies.
4) Write it down. What are your goals? Do you have any goals? How do you plan on achieving your goals? Write it all down and make it official.
5) Keep going, not matter what. In other words, DON’T GIVE UP! Don’t let another excuse, unexpected event or disappointment keep you from achieving your goals. Life is filled with unexpected events but you don’t have to let them dictate your life. Someone else may set the stage but you determine the character you’re going to play.

Start next year off right, TODAY!

DreamBodies Bocca Salad

Hey, hey hey! Here's another DreamBodies recipe for you guys to enjoy. I came up with this recipe by accident. I was starving and there was nothing to eat. I hadn't gone grocery shopping and the freezer was empty expect for this lonely Boca Patty sitting in its wrapper without a box to call home. So sad :) So I grabbed it and and went to town. Here's what I came up with.

DreamBodies Boca Salad

Ingredients:

1 oz Extra Sharp Cheddar Cheese

1 egg white, cooked and cut into small bite size pieces

salt and pepper to taste

1 Boca Patty

2- 21/2 cups of lettuce or leafy green of choice

2 tbs Raspberry Sesame Salad Dressing

1tbs of currants

Put all the ingredients in a bowl except the egg whites, Boca Patty, salt and pepper. Cook your Boca in non-stick skillet and set a side. Cook your egg white in the same skillet adding extra virgin olive oil, if needed, then set aside. Chop your egg whites and Boca patty into small bite size pieces and place on top of your salad. Toss and enjoy!
